Here are some common door problems and fixes:

1.  Door is catching or sticking on some part of the jamb.  This is a common problem.  There is a large number of things that can cause a door to stick.  Usually it is because something has moved, either the jamb itself or the hinges.  Usually the door exhibits signs over a period of time that generally get worse.  At some point the door will no longer close.  Check the hinges first to make sure that they are screwed in all the way.  Second, look for places on the jamb where the door is hitting. In this case, if it appears there are no other major problems, then shaving off a part of the door is a good solution.  You can use a hand planer, mini hand (powered planer) or even a belt sander.  If using power tools, it’s always a good idea to double tape the two faces of the door with painters tape to avoid scarring the door finish.

2.  Door hinge screws are coming out.  Many a door repair in Fredericton NB involve this.  Over time the screws that hold the hinges in will start to loosen.  You can tighten them, but will notice that they quickly come loose again.  They will do this almost indefinitely and after awhile it becomes quite an annoyance.  One good way to fix this is to remove the door, drill a hole in the jamb for a dowel, then glue the dowel in and drill new pilot holes for the screws again.  This will allow the screws to bite into tight wood again, without the need for constant re-tightening.

3.  Door won’t stay latched.  Many times this is just a matter of repositioning the door striker plate.  If the movement is too much, this can be challenging and may require re-drilling of the holes for the plate, as well as removing more of the wood around the striker plate.

4.  Drafty door.  In most cases, this has to do with the seals around the door.  There are bottom seals that keep the air from getting through as well as on the outside edges all around.  When these seals get old, or get damaged, they need to be replaced.
